HOW MUSIC WAS MY ESCAPE

DURING LEVEL 5 LOCKDOWN

Blog by Paige Fiddes

It’s really hard for me not to get cheesy about music! I can’t remember a time where music wasn’t a big part of my life. Growing up in Joburg with a young single mom we constantly had music playing in our house. Music became a coping mechanism in my youth because it can be a beautiful way to escape and change your whole energy through different genres and sounds. I think that’s very relatable to a lot of people.

Lockdown level 5 for me, like for many people, meant losing a lot of clients. So this gave me some free time, which I was actually quite excited about because that meant learning new skills, getting in touch with my creative side and connecting with friends and family. Being someone that’s super into music, needless to say I've been drawn to people that share the same interest - I ended up compiling a tonne of playlists for friends and family and vice versa. It was such a special way to discover new music and connect with the people I adore. I also embraced the time to up skill in sound design for video production and pulled out my dusty guitar and attempted learning some new songs.

I locked down with my family (mom, stepdad and my younger siblings) which was initially quite difficult because we were all stressed out with all the uncertainty, but as soon as it was time to cook dinner and the music started playing we were all together dancing in the kitchen and for the rest of the evening, nothing else mattered. Towards the end of level 5, a job came up to help film a documentary in Wallacedene which lead me back to Cape Town where I went into lockdown with my boyfriend who happens to be a musician. My boyfriend and I have very similar taste in music and we ended up creating a song which was super special. The song itself is a bit trippy and experimental (play the song above) but I think it summed up the lethargic dreamy state we were in due to lockdown. I have always been really curious about the songwriting process so creating this song gave me a whole new perspective on music and a lot of respect to musicians!

Music is a beautiful gift. I definitely would have gone loopy if it wasn't for music during this uncertain period. Through listening, discovering, connecting and creating music I managed to stay grounded.
